SWIFT-An Introduction

SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) is a cooperative owned by the players of the banking sector that offers a standardised and safe message turnover with its own network connection solutions to approximately 7,600 financial institutions in more than 200 countries. The SWIFT community includes banks, brokers and investment advisors, with their complete treasury, payment, trading and settlement systems.

It was founded in 1973 by 239 banks of 15 countries in order to ensure the safety and controllability of the message turnover among banks. Potential objectives included achieving a turnover of 300,000 messages a day, with a forwarding time of maximum 30 minutes. At present, more than 30 years later daily message turnover achieves 9,000,000 items, and messages reach their destination in less than 20 seconds on average in the SWIFT network.

In the recent years, the costs of SWIFT messages have decreased by more than 70% due to the large volume, and the introduction of state-of-the-art technologies, such as SWIFTNet, SWIFT’s new IP-based message turnover.

KELER in the SWIFT Network

KELER is a full-fledged member of the Hungarian SWIFT network, and since November 2002 it has been completely ISO 15022 compatible. At present, KELER offers the opportunity of SWIFT connection only to its foreign partners. Due to the features of the VIBER system, KELER communicates with the National Bank of Hungary also via SWIFT, which makes the OTC settlements administered by KELER and the related financial bookings quicker and safer.
